Hiroshi Maruta is an expert in both molecular oncology and the major oncogenic/ageing kinase “PAK1” which is essential for a wide variety of diseases/disorders such as cancer, Alzheimer’s disease (AD), diabetes (type 2), hypertension, and a variety of infectious and inflammatory diseses (1). His team found that PAK1-deficient mutant of C. elegans lives 60% longer than the wild-type, clearing indicating that PAK1 shortens the healthy lifespan (2). Via “Click Chemitsty” his team recently developed a series of potent (highly cell-permeable) 1,2,3-triazolyl esters of COOH-bearing PAK1-blockers which are potentially useful for both cancer therapy and longevity-promotion (3-5).

Dale W Laird and his research team has been examining the role of connexin gap junction proteins in health and disease for over 25 years. Since being recruited from McGill University in 1997, Dr. Laird’s research program has flourished as connexin gene mutations were discovered and shown to cause many human diseases. This coincided with the generation of numerous genetically-modified mice where connexin genes were ablated or mutated to mimic human diseases. Dr. Laird’s laboratory routinely employs these mutant mice together with organotypic cultures and patient cells to investigate the link between connexin gene mutations and a diverse array of diseases and syndromes ranging from skeletal development anomalies to skin disease.

Professor Mubarak received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in chemistry from the University of Jordan in 1976 and 1978, respectively and obtained his Ph.D. degree from Indiana University, Bloomington, USA in 1982, under the supervision of Professor Dennis G. Peters. He did his post doctorate work at Oklahoma University between Oct.1982-August1983. Mubarak started his teaching career at King Saud University, Abha, Saudi Arabia, as an assistant professor in 1983, and then became an associate professor in 1992. In January 1993, Mubarak returned home to joined the teaching staff at the Department of chemistry, The University of Jordan, and in 1998, he was promoted to the rank of full Professor. Dr. Mubarak held a number of administrative positions at The University of Jordan, including Chairman of the Department of Chemistry, and Vice Dean of the Faculty of Science, 2009-2011. He has also assumed the position of Academic Consultant and Vice Dean at Al-Ghad International Medical Sciences College, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, 2011- 2012. He is also an Adjunct professor of Chemistry at Indiana University, Bloomington (USA) since 2009. In addition to electrochemistry, Professor Mubarak’s research program is broadly based on synthetic organic chemistry, especially synthesis of compounds with expected biological activity, medicinal chemistry, medicinal plants and natural products, and drug design and discovery. Tetsuro Wakatsuki obtained MS in Mechanical Engineering and PhD in Biophysics at the Washington University, St. Louis. Since 2012 he took a full time Chief Scientific Officer position at InvivoSciences, Inc. which he co-found in 2001. American healthcare system spends >$200 billion in cardiovascular treatment. Inter-individual variability in efficacy and toxicity response is rather large for cardiovascular treatments. InvivoSciences has developed an in vitro disease model that recapitulates individual patient’s cardiomyopathy in engineered heart tissues (EHTs) using the patient-derived cells. Automated cell culture and novel cardiomyocyte-differentiation protocol improved the productivity and reproducibility for generating patient-specific disease models for drug and diagnostics development. The application of our technology to establish a patient-specific disease model for a rare disease, Muscular Dystrophy (MD), will be discussed. While the exon skipping treatment could finally overcome skeletal muscle wasting of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), it depends on skeletal muscle’s high regenerative capacity. Therefore, the limited regenerative capacity of cardiac muscle encounters challenges for treating DMD heart failure, which was recognized only recently. Mass-produced micro-scale EHTs from patient-derived cardiomyocytes using induced pluripotent stem cell technology recapitulate a patient-specific DMD heart failure phenotype in vitro and screen compounds for drug discovery. A detection of slowly developing DMD cardiac phenotypes in EHTs was required to comprehensively analyze their excitation-contraction-energy coupling (ECEC) by measuring their action potential, calcium transient, cardiac contractility, and mitochondrial metabolism by a high-throughput assay device under various stress conditions. Combining multi-scale (i.e., molecule to whole body) computational models of human physiology with the ECEC analysis of EHTs will predict clinical outcomes (e.g., cardiotoxicity and efficacy) of a potential treatment at the preclinical stage. The project will support discovery of disease mechanisms to identify potential targets for therapy.

Dr. Nefzi has completed his PhD at the age of 32 years from the University of Lausanne in Switzerland and postdoctoral studies from The Torrey Pines Institute of Molecular Studies, in Sn Diego, CA. He is the director of Chemistry at Torrey Pines Institute. He has published more than 120 papers in reputed journals and has more than 10 patents in drug discovey.

Dr. Stuart Ratcliffe is a Director of MAC Clinical Research Ltd., where he also serves as Chief Scientific Officer and Director of Pain Research across five highly-specialized, privately-owned research facilities in the UK. MAC is the UK’s largest neuroscience SMO, focusing on a small number of key neuroscience clinical development areas. Serving a local population of over 25m, MAC’s 80+ research physicians, neuro-psychologists, psychologist- and nurse-raters, and support staff are engaged primarily in early phase clinical studies in models of nociceptive/inflammatory pain and neuropathic pain, utilizing standard as well as sophisticated eligibility and outcome tools; to this end, MAC collaborates with several European and US academic pain groups. MAC sites also conduct studies in patients with Alzheimer’s Disease, multiple sclerosis, sleep disorders, FM and major depressive disorder. Prior to joining MAC, Dr Ratcliffe co-founded and directed the Barts Pain Research Group, an integral part of Barts and The London NHS Trust’s Research and Development Department, and the Academic Anaesthesia, Pain Medicine and Critical Care Centre of the William Harvey Research Institute, within the Queen Mary University of London. Capitalizing on a blend of skills and knowledge, probably unique within an NHS setting, considerable experience was gained in almost every aspect of clinical trial design and execution, and the Group became increasingly well-known in areas such as the COX-2 arena, palliative care analgesia studies, cannabinoid development, neuropathic pain and clinical opioid development in non-cancer pain. Qualifying in medicine in 1985, Dr. Ratcliffe trained in pharmaceutical medicine and gained considerable experience in the field of analgesic research and development. His 12 years based in Germany saw a rise to International Medical Director, commissioning analgesic trials worldwide. As protocol author and/or Principal Investigator, Dr. Ratcliffe has been involved with over 150 pain trials, in the UK and elsewhere. Dr. Ratcliffe is an active member of the International Association of the Study of Pain, the British and the American Pain Societies, the American Society of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics (Analgesic Section) and the British Association of Pharmaceutical Physicians. He presents widely at meetings and sits on several development advisory boards. More recently Dr Ratcliffe has served the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Medicine as Educational Supervisor.

Professor Nagatoshi Nishiwaki received his Ph. D. in 1991 from Osaka University. He worked at Professor Ariga’s group in Department of Chemistry, Osaka Kyoiku University, as assistant professor (1991-2000) and as associate professor (2001-2008). From 2000 to 2001, he joined to Karl Anker Jørgensen’s group at Århus University in Denmark. He worked at Center for Collaborative Research, Anan National College of Technology as associate professor from 2008 to 2009. Then, he moved to School of Environmental Science and Engineering, Kochi University of Technology in 2009, and he is a professor from 2011. George Perry (born April 12, 1953 in Lompoc, California) is a neuroscientist recognized in the field of Alzheimer's disease research particularly for his work in oxidative stress. Dr. Perry has studied at many universities and holds multiple degrees including a Bachelor of Arts degree in Zoology from the University of California Santa Barbara and a PhD in Marine Biology from the University of California at San Diego. He is distinguished as one of the top Alzheimer’s disease researcherswith over 1000 publications, more than 60,000 citations, one of the top 100 most-cited scientists in Neuroscience & Behavior and one of the top 25 scientists in free radical research. Dr. Perry is a Semmes Foundation Distinguished chair in Neurobiology and is an active participant in many other scientific associations.
